Professionally degrease and clean model making utensils

Every model builder knows the problem: greasy fingerprints, dust, or sweat on delicate components. Especially when gluing or painting, a completely clean surface is crucial for successful work and a perfect finish. But how can model-making tools and parts be reliably degreased and cleaned?

Why grease-free surfaces are so important

Grease and sweat not only have a disruptive effect on plastics, metals, or painted surfaces, but can actually damage them. The result is poor bonding, uneven paint finishes, or even damaged surfaces. Therefore, the parts must be thoroughly cleaned before any further processing.

Mechanical preparatory work

Before you start degreasing, model parts should first be freed of dust, chips or grinding residues .

  • Plastic parts: fine sandpaper with grain 320–400

  • Wooden parts: Sandpaper from grain 120 to approx. 240

This is the only way to prevent residues from settling in cracks or edges and only becoming visible after painting.

Cleaning baths in model making

Individual assemblies or small parts can be easily degreased in a lye or mild cleaning solution .

  • Larger components: clean with a sponge

  • Smaller components: use soft brushes or metal tea strainers

An ultrasonic bath is particularly effective in reliably removing even the finest dirt particles and grease.

Ultrasonic cleaning for model components

In the ultrasonic device , even tiny particles in the cleaning basket are captured by sound waves. Cavitation reliably removes grease, sweat, and dirt from any surface—even in hard-to-reach corners.

Suitable cleaning agents:

  • distilled water with a little mild detergent for light soiling

  • special ultrasonic cleaning concentrates for stubborn residues

After cleaning, we recommend rinsing under hot water and air drying . Avoid using a cloth to avoid lint buildup.

Conclusion

Clean, grease-free surfaces are the foundation for precise work in model making. With mechanical preparatory work and professional ultrasonic cleaning, even the smallest parts can be reliably degreased. This ensures optimal bonding and painting results – and makes model making not only more thorough but also easier.
